Season 5 of The Biggest Loser started off with 9 Biggest Loser couples who knew each other in one way or the other. The 10th couple were two people chosen from The Biggest Loser Club.
Did anyone notice something missing with the Season 5 premier?
If you guessed Kim Lyons, you’d be correct!
I felt after Season 4 that Kim was on her way out. Buzz around the Internet didn’t show her in good favor with many viewers either.
NBC and Kim’s publicist said that Kim had other “opportunities” and that she needed to “focus” on her other projects, such as her new book due out this month.
This is along the same lines we heard when Caroline Rhea went away.
Let’s face it, Kim had trouble keeping control of her teams. She never did seem to be able to pull everything together and as far as I can recall, never turned out a “Biggest Loser”.
The show got started right off the bat with a Challenge. The challenge consited of all 10 teams racing to the top of a hill, tagging a post and making their way back down to the finish line.
The reward?
The first teams back got to choose which trainer they would be training with.
Since each trainer could only train 5 teams, the first teams back would get their choice of trainer while the last ones back would have to settle for any open spots.
Needless to say, Jillian Michael’s side filled up first. When she reached 5 teams, Bob Harper only had 2 teams on his side.
This seemed to hurt Bob’s feelings and he made the comment “What? Do they think I’m not tough enough?”
Let’s be real. Most everyone knew the serious teams would choose Jillian because she gets results. Not that Bob doesn’t, but they have different training styles and Bob’s style is perceived to be easier. Most teams said they wanted to be on Jillians team because they knew she would kick their asses in shape!
I’ve hear many people say Jillian is too tough on the contestants. Hey, if we could all lose weight with group hugs and nice pep talks, we’d all be at our ideal weight! Many of us realize we need a trainer who will push us to our limits and beyond. Everyone who chose Jillian knew she would do just that!
Then the teams went to weigh in and the air time (read ad time) consuming trip to the Hospital to see a doctor who showed them the Morgue and told them how they were all going to die if they didn’t lose the weight….like those of us overweight haven’t heard that a hundred times!
The rest of the show consited of showing the teams interacting with each other and the relationship issues with each couple.
At the final weigh in, the two teams that fell below the yellow line were the two young weight loss counselors and the father/daughter team from Ohio, Lynn and Jenni.
You could tell that 60 year old Lynn did not want to be on the show. He didn’t try very well to hide it either! I did feel sorry for his daughter Jenni who did want to be at The Biggest Loser Ranch. Lynn promised her up one side and down the other that he would continue on with his diet and training once they got back to Ohio if they were kicked off the Ranch.
Of course, they were!
After 6 weeks, he’d only lost 30lbs (he lost 19 of that in one week on the show) while daughter Jenni had lost 20 something (7 of which she lost on the show). They don’t seem to be doing well on their own. I wish them all the best.
If the other teams had really been thinking, they would have booted off Maggie and Jennifer since they were a young team. Common sense tells you that these two will probably come back on fire now. We’ll have to wait and see.
