A recent study suggest that women who stick with the wildly popular Mediterranean Diet during pregnancy, may not only be healthier, but give birth to babies who have a better chance of not gettng childhood asthma and allergies. That should be enough reason to stick to the Mediterranean diet don’t you think?

Previous studies have shown the advantages of the Mediterranean Diet when fighting Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes.

Doctors fround 507 women and who attended a clinic on the Mediterranean Island of Menorca.

This was back in 1997 and 6 years later they examined the women and their children.

What the doctors found were that children from the low score group, or those who did not follow a Mediterranean type diet, were 3 to 4 more times likely to develop allergies and asthmatic symptoms!

What they found most beneficial were women who ate vegetables more than 8 times per wee, fish more than 3 times per week and beans or peas more than once per week.

Red meat eaten more than 3 or 4 times per week seemed to boost the chances of Children coming down with allergies or asthmatic conditions.

The Mediterranean Diet is known to be high in antioxidants due to the food that makes up the diet. Fish, vegetables and Red wine. Although in this study, red wine and other alchohol was prohibited.

Antioxidants are known to have a protective effect against asthma in young children, while the fatty acids shield against inflammation, a key factor in the complex problem of asthma said the doctors.

This long term study was headed by Leda Chatzi, a doctor at the Department of Social Medicine at the University of Crete, Greece.
