It wasn’t that long ago that I told you about a study that showed the health benefits of The Mediterranean Diet when used by people suffering from diabetes. Now a new study shows that the Mediterranean diet helps those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.

This UK study used 130 women split into two groups. One group was given hands on information about the Mediterannean way of eating, which includes mostly fish, poultry, fruits and vegetables along with olive oil for cooking. They also received cooking instructions along with the other information. The other group was simply given written information.

The group of women who recieved the hands on information reported improved health in as little as 6 weeks. This includes less morning pains and stiffness in the bones and joints. The other group of women reported no such health improvements.

The Health Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet is not New News

The outcome of this study should not come as new news to anyone. There has been study after study showing the benefits of a Mediterranean type diet.

Back in 2003, WebMD reported on a Swedish study that found patients who followed a Mediterranean type diet had healthier reports than those who did not.

In the Swedish study, 26 patients who were on a Mediterranean diet reported improved health issues while those who were on a dairy and red meat based diet, such as the one most of us in the U.S. eat, reported no improved health issues.

Many of the researchers believe the key reasons that the Mediterranean diet is so much more healthy for us is the anti-oxidants in the fruits and vegetables along with the essential oils in the Olive oil used in cooking traditional Mediterranean style meals.

Olive oil and canola oil are high in oleic acid and vitamin E. Like vitamin E, oleic acid has an anti-inflammatory effect and is thought to reduce inflammation levels.

This is just another reason those of us who love red meat and dairy products (and oh how I do!) should start moving toward the healtheir Mediterranean diet. Have any Mediterranian style recipes or cooking techniques you want to share?
