Well, you knew the day would come when someone would invent a weight loss pill that Uncle Sam approves of. That day is now. The FDA approved a non prescription weight loss pill yesterday.

Apparently this new drug is a lower dose version of the prescription drug Xenical. In great U.S. Government style, U.S. Officials state that the drug has to be used in conjunction with diet and exercise to work efficiently.

“Using this drug alone is unlikely to be beneficial,”

The new drug is being called alli. Well duh! If someone is dieting and exercising, I doubt they will need a weight loss pill!

The final price for this new weigt loss pill hasn’t been announced, but sources say it will run about $1 to $2 a day.

There is one party pooping Doctor in this whole mix who is calling “Fowl”.

Dr. Sidney M. Wolfe, director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group said that the approval was the “height of recklessness.”

Dr. Wolfe stated that some studies have showed the prescription version of the drug with precancerous lesions of the colon.

Dr. Wolfe also went on to say that he opposed the approval of the over-the counter sale. He then went on to call the plan a

“dangerous mistake in light of its marginal benefits, frequent coexistence of other diseases, common, bothersome adverse reactions, significant inhibition of absorption of fat soluble vitamins.”

I guess only time will tell how well this drug is used. I’m hopeful, but we’ve seen other “approved” drugs fail after they reached the market. Can you say Vioxx?
