I have to admit it, I love those little packaged energy bars. Unfortunately for me there are two problems with them. They’re expensive and they contain a lot of fat and calories. I’ve been trying several homemade energy bar recipes and have come up with a few energy bar recipes that I like well. Yes, they’re still high in fat and calories, as compared to some other “health” food, but I’m active and use up the calories and fat.
Here are my favorite homemade energy bar recipes:
1/2 cup powdered nonfat milk
1 cup regular rolled oats
1/2 cup sesame seed
1 cups raisins or craisins (I prefer the craisins)
1 cup blanched almonds, finely chopped
1 1/2 cups unsweetened coconut chips
1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
3 teaspoons butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups of light corn syrup
1 cup Reese peanut butter chips
3 teaspoon finely grated orange peel (wash peel thoroughly before grating)
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate baking chips
Spread oats in a large baking pan and bake in a 350 degree oven until oats are toasted. Do not let the oats scorch!
Place the sesame seeds in a large frying pan over high heat and toss or stir regularly until the seeds are a golden brown.
Mix together in a large bowl the following ingrediants: raisins, coconut, almonds, powdered milk, and wheat germ. Once you have all these ingrediants thoroughly mixed, mix in the hot oats. Mix well.
Prepare you baking pan by warming it up and then buttering it. Set it to the side while you prepare the rest of the energy bar recipe.
After you’ve don that, take a small sauce pan and combine the corn syrup and sugar and bring to a boil over high heat and quickly stir the peanut butter chips, chocolate chips and orange peelings.
Pour hot syrup/sugar/peanut butter/orange peel/chocolate chip mixture over the oatmeal mix and stir thoroughly.
This next step needs to be performed pretty quick: Spread the hot mixture into the buttered pan an press into a smooth layer like a sheet cake. Don’t wait too long or the mixture will start setting up and be hard to spread.
Cover and let sit in refrigerator over night. The next day you can cut them into the size of squares you prefer. I make several different sizes. Small squares for “power snacks” and I use the larger ones for when we go camping or hiking.
2 cups uncooked Quaker Multi-Grain cereal
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup coarsely chopped (unblanched) almonds
1/2 cup unsalted sunflower seeds
2/3rds cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup Hershey’s cocoa
1/4 cup wheat germ
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
dash of salt
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 large egg
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 teaspoons vanilla
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Next, lightly coat a 9×13 baking pan with grease.
Combine the cereal, raisins, almonds, sunflower seeds, flour, cocoa, wheat germ, cinnamon, baking soda and salt in a large mixing bowl, mixing thoroughly.
Use another mixing bowl to combine the vegetable oil, brown sugar and egg until thoroughly blended until fluffy.
Mix in the applesauce and vanilla then add the dry ingredients and stir until well mixed.
Spread the batter in the pan and bake until golden brown, usually around 30 to 45 minutes.
Cool until warm on wire racks before cutting into the size of bars you prefer.
1/2 cup honey
1 cup nonfat powdered milk (do not use the instant)
1 cup raisins (or craisins)
1/3 cup shredded coconut
1 teaspons Cinamon
1/2 cup Chocolate chips or M&N’s
1/2 cup Reese Peanut Butter chips
Mix all the ingredients together in a large mixing bowl with enough powdered milk until stiff but not so that it falls apart.
Cut to desired size and chill.
If you have a great homemade energy bar recipe, let me know! Until then, enjoy!

1Nice to see all these recipes but I have to wonder… power bar or sugar bar. Some sound more like a kiddie snack and lack the nutrtition needed. I’ll agree that they sure sound tasty but a couple I wouldn’t eat on a daily basis.
The oat bars sound great but I would eliminate the chips mostly due to the fat factor. Just my opinion guys… the healthier the better.

2Interesting recipes. Not necessary though unless you are doing strenuous physical activity.

3ever tried Matisse & Jack’s homemade energy bars? i think they renamed them power snacks. they are baking mixes that you add applesauce to, and bake, for your own energy bars. taste delicious (fresh!) but are easier to make and a good price.
