I was reading an article about portion control and leftovers on Yahoo Health the other day. I found it interesting that the author of the article actually used leftovers for portion control.

Heck, I’ve been doing this for years and it never struck me that I was practicing portion control!

Normally whenever I make a meal, I’ll always make more than what I need expecting to put the extra into the fridge to be used later. Sometimes I’ll make extra and freeze the rest. I only freeze the extra food in the portions I need. So whenever I need a quick meal, I just take out a frozen left over meal and Presto! I have a ready to each meal after zapping it in the Microwave. Perfectly portioned for my diet!

You can also use this for when you go out and eat. Everyone knows that most places give you way to much food. You especially know this if you’re trying to diet!

What I do is once my meal arrives, look at it and decide how many sensible portions there are. I then ask for a to-go box right then and there. I’ll portion the meal out that is to be taken home and enjoy the rest.

I’ve found that if I don’t do this, then my portion becomes all the food on the plate!

Once I’m back at home, the extra portions go either into the fridge or freezer for another day.

Another thing that I’ve learned along the way is that you can store fresh fruit. Earlier in the Summer, we visited a Blackberry farm (the fruit kind, not the Smart Phone kind) and picked about 10 pounds of Blackberries. We then came home and portioned out the Blackberries into individual portions in zip lock baggies and containers. Of course, we do use some for a low cal cobbler and I used some on my real ice cream…sorry, the ice cream wasn’t low cal! But I did have a small portion =)

Since then, I’ve started doing this with other fruit and it has turned out well.

So now I’m not only saving money on food, I’m also eating healthier! What’s not to love!
