In a recent head to head study lasting a year, women on the Atkins diet lost more weight than those on 3 other popular diet regimens. They also showed no ill effects from this low carb diet after a year.
The study was performed by Stanford University. The study compared 4 popular diet regimens. 311 obese women took part in the study that lasted for a year.
The 4 diet regimens that were used in the study were the Atkins diet, The Zone diet, Ornish and the LEARN diet.
Bonnie Brehm, assistant Professor of Nutrition at the Cincinnati College of Nursing and co-author of two similar independent studies regarding low-carb diets such as the Atkins Diet, stated;
The findings are pretty much in line with what all the other studies have shown comparing Atkins and low-fat diets. We have found the same thing with all our trials.
As would be expected, reactions from the founders of the other diets were’nt overly excited about the findings of the study.
Barry Sears of The Zone diet stated;
It’s bad science, good publicity
Ornish, a clinical professor at U of C in San Francisco said;
This study is seriously flawed, and its conclusions misleading. There was significantly more weight loss on the Atkins diet after one year only when compared with the Zone diet. This directly contradicts their primary conclusion.
However, none of them could explain away how study after study shows that the Atkins Diet provides users with more weight loss than other diet programs.
