I found this interesting story online today about former Australian Contestants on The Biggest Loser Australia complaining about the lack of support they received from The Biggest Loser once they left the show.

As I read the story, I got the feeling that this is a widespread complaint with former contestants. I thought this was odd because if it was such a big problem, I think you’d certainly hear about it from the former U.S. contestants of The Biggest Loser as well. I haven’t heard a peep out of any former contestant saying the lack of support after they left the show caused them to regain their weight.

Could it be that the Australian contestants are expecting too much? Why would the expect support after they left the show?

One of the contestants stated in the news article:

“They ring you now and again to see how you’re doing (when the show is running), but they don’t really give a s—,” she said. “But I’ve not had one phone call from anyone since the show ended. “That’s the time when a lot of people really need help.”

I just have to say, weight loss is a very personal thing. As an overweight person, no one made you eat the donuts and bad food nor did they make you drink the gallons of soda. You have to want to change and you have to dig down and do this on your own. Sure, companies like Weight Watcher, Jenny Craig, The Biggest Loser Club and forums like The Biggest Loser Forums are all great in giving you a little support. But in the end, it comes down to you doing the work to loose the weight. No one can do that for you and if you have to have someone hold your hand every step of the way, then you may not be ready to lose the weight IMHO.

Some of the contestants on The Biggest Loser Australia have the attitude that it’s a given that they’ll gain the weight back after they leave because they can not work out 4 to 6 hours a day. Were these people paying attention during the show? I’m sure the trainers teach them about nutrition the same way they do here. I can’t imagine Bob Harper telling an Australian contestant to go eat burgers and drink soda’s.

Okay, so you aren’t going to be losing 7 to 20 lbs every week now that you’re not on the show working out 4 to 6 hours a day, but if you continue to burn more calories than you take in, you’re going to lose weight! Now you might only lose 1 to 5 lbs per week.

I just have to wonder if the Australia media is making more of this than it is. As I said earlier, I don’t see no U.S. stories about former contestants complaining about the lack of support after they leave the show. Hey, you can always hire your own trainer!
